Padel super tiebreak rules: the 10-point match tie-break

When is a super tiebreak played?

It applies at one set all in a best of three match, and only if the format says so. It is one of the alternative scoring methods in the FIP Rules of Padel: at one set each a super tie-break is played to decide the match, it replaces the last set, and the first pair to win ten points with a margin of two wins it.

At FIP level, Premier Padel and the CUPRA FIP Tour play best of three full sets with a tiebreak at 6-6 and have no super tiebreak. FIP Promises plays two sets and then a match tie-break to 10, and FIP Beyond does the same in some draw sizes. Clubs and leagues use the format mainly to shorten matches, since a race to 10 is much shorter than a full third set.

Is a super tiebreak the same as a match tie-break?

Often, but not always, and the words matter. The FIP Rules of Padel list two separate alternatives: a tie-break to define the match, played to 7 points, and a super tie-break to define the match, played to 10. The FIP Promises and FIP Beyond rulebooks call the 10 point version a Match Tie-Break played to 10 points. So when someone says match tie-break, check whether they mean 7 or 10.

How do the points and the serve work?

Points are counted 1, 2, 3 up to 10, with the two point margin. 10-8 wins. 10-9 does not, so play continues to 11-9, 12-10 and so on.

The 2026 Rules of Padel describe the serve order and the change of ends for the ordinary tiebreak and do not restate them for the 10 point version. The pattern used in practice is the same one: the first server serves one point, then service alternates every two points, and players change ends every six points. The 2021 edition of the rules adds that the original order of service continues, and that is how Padel Score Tracker runs it, with the pair whose turn to serve is next starting. The match ends as soon as a pair has 10 points and a lead of two, wherever that falls in the table.

How does a super tiebreak change the way you play?

Ten points leave little room for a slow start. Two loose rallies at the beginning are a fifth of the tiebreak, so the first few points matter as much as the last few.

How do you write a super tiebreak score?

The usual way is to write it like a third set: 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. Because the result then looks like a set, write down the format too. A 10 point tiebreak and a third set played without a tiebreak can produce the same looking figure, and they describe different matches.
